Back and forth

It's bad. It's good. It's tough. It's impossible. I don't know if I'll last. I could do this forever.

but alas, it all depends too much on student mood. I've got to take that out of the equation. Last night I was ready to quit; today, things seem to be going well.

Try not to care about the students. I mean, care about their educations but you shouldn't let their assholiness get to you.

I remember three things my dad said about teaching:

When the days start to get you down, an odd holiday will come along and give you a break.

When he was takinmg teacher education classes in San Jose State in the early 60s, the professor started class by opening the window drapes to show a view of the education building, and he intoned seriously: "the state of teaching would be greatly well-served if a great bottomless hole opened up and that building fell into it."

The kids will challenge you and keep you young.

Hang in there - I'm sure you are making a difference. FYI, you didn't f-lock this one.

yes it is frustrating - perhaps even more so than when teachers had us in class (tongue firmly planted in cheek) BUT I am sure you make a difference. Perhaps for only one student, but it is that student that will take what you give them and help make the future better. Yes I'm sure of this. I've seen it happen over and over again. So hang in there.
