Three Thoughts on Teaching
1. Teaching-Kun: I will be a kick-ass teacher for my students.
2. Sheep can be herded, goats must be led. Lead them and they will follow.
3. 90% of communication is non-verbal. 80% of performance is expectations.
This session of classes is not going as well as the previous one. My current head cold is sapping my energy, and the result is I'm giving less to the class, and they're returning less, and the whole session isn't working as well. It doesn't help that the afternoon session two is hard to pick up on in the middle; I'll have it in hand by the end.
The two teachers I most respected at LPSSJ expoused a tough love theory, and one stated that he judged all things against the goal of being a kick-ass teacher. If something is worth doing, why not do it full on right? It's a teacher-kun (akin to a dojo-kun or a credo). But what is being a kick ass teacher? Being on top of things, being ready, being compassionate but clear about the overall goals.
I haven't been that teacher yet this session. Time to (insert cliche or overused metaphor here).
As for the second quote, I need to be clearer in my lead; it's like dancing. A clear lead and you both do well; a sloppy lead and mistakes happen.
Finally, time to go to the drycleaner, get the cup of coffee well before class, and get excited about this stuff again. Tomorrow, water and boats.
