For those celebrating, I hope you had a good holiday. Me, I went to this...I don't want to call it a soup kitchen per se, free community meal? Mostly it's there and free for the students who can't go home and for townspeople who can't afford it etc. Helped out. Had lunch of well stuffing and cake and a bit of turkey. the rest is...not to my taste but that's okay. Can't complain about free.

Came home, didn't clean. Wrote some. Did book reviews I forgot to do. Made pumpkin soup, stuffin muffins and threw the rotisserie turkey breast in the oven. Not a bad meal at all.

I have Free HBO, Starz etc this weekend. Have recorded the new Superman movie and 5 episodes of It Welcome to Derry so there's that.

Hope you all had a nice day. I'm thankful for my friends in RL and online.

Unlike other members of my family, it has been literally years since I’ve baked anything, and even longer since I baked anything more complicated than a frozen pizza. But for this Thanksgiving, I will feeling a little ambitious, and I saw a recipe on the Dessert Person YouTube channel that looked good, so I thought I would give it a shot.

And what do you know, I pulled it off! Please see above my 7-layer holiday bars (pre-bar form), most prominently featuring cranberries and coconut. It turned out pretty well, and my family did not have to pretend to like it just to humor me. We have learned that I can follow directions, at least in the form of a recipe. This is good news. I’ll include the video I got the recipe off of so you can try it for yourself.

If you’re a person in the US, I hope your Thanksgiving was a good one if you chose to celebrate it, and for everyone else, I hope you had a pretty good Thursday.

I put my chicken in the oven and fried up the chicken skins and - listen, I gotta say, of all the food items I've tried because I read about them, fried chicken skins are fucking amazing. I don't mind saying that they are, hands down, the most brilliant thing Jews have contributed to the world, and I do hope my various Jewish friends take that in the spirit it's intended, because omg. I don't care if I find out later that you guys invented the wheel, this is better. I am very thankful.

Anyway, we've got chicken, creamed spinach, possibly creamed corn, maybe beets of some sort, maybe couscous, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes (with marshmallows, contributed by a guest), stuffing, cornbread, cranberry sauce, and pies. I'm debating making some soup as well, buuuuuuut I think we may have enough food and not enough bowls. Oh, and there's green beans. Oh, and brussels sprouts and a salad.

(Maybe I should've made baked beans? I wonder if I have time to make baked beans. Oh, but the chicken is in the oven. Hm. Can you make not-baked baked beans? Is that a thing?)

don't worry I don't have a concussion

I am just thinking about concussions in a general family sort of way. I have a lot of experience of them, and also a lot of experience of downplaying my own head injuries. I thought that was just a matter of not wanting to use up my whining points when I might need them for dealing with migraine or motion-sickness or something else that could be dealt with more usefully. When modern concussion awareness programs started treating injuries like concussions if people were not unconscious for very long, I started reassessing a lot of the falls in my memory.

(That led to weird conversations with neurologists.
"Have you ever had a concussion?"
"Yes."
"How many?"
"I don't know." This can't be that unusual for people with seizures, even non-convulsive seizures like mine are fall risks. But he looked so very surprised.)

For quite a while I looked back on it thought it was just exhausting to deal with my parents' approach to medical emergencies. So I had years of solidly motivated reasoning to convince myself that any head impact I could walk away from must not be a concussion. Then I remembered it wasn't just the kind of exhausting as their, "Oh no! A child has a bad cut! Let us all run around in a panic and shout at everyone who can possibly be shouted at until the ER doctor stitches it up!" (Which is exhausting, and not what the first aid manual means by applying pressure.) It's that AND their belief that people with suspected concussion ought not be allowed to sleep.

A few decades ago, when I was feeling oddly wistful about young athletes growing up with the modern concussion awareness programs, I thought how great it was that they were prescribing more rest as well as diagnosing concussion based on less severe symptoms. Oh well, too bad we didn't know about that back in the 1970s, isn't modern medicine great? It turns out that my mom still believes people with suspected concussion should not fall asleep. She fell and hit her head a few days ago. She didn't want to drive herself to urgent care because she felt dizzy and her vision was kind of blurry, and she didn't want to sit in an uncomfortable waiting room with a terrible headache. But she suspected she might have a concussion so she had to stay awake for 24 hours. After doing so, she called me and said she was fine and I shouldn't worry. I told her that modern best practice was to get some rest after a head injury, ("But this might have been a concussion! I had to stay awake to make sure it wasn't a concussion!") but first phone the doctor to ask if you have one of the symptoms that would need the ER. ("Why should I go to the ER? If they tell me it's a concussion they would just tell me to stay awake for 24 hours and if I do that at home at least it won't hurt my back.")

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

Too Many People

Just everywhere but the laundromat. Did I mention the assholes broke both washing machines here and I had to go to my old one in Jackson. Well...I won't bitch about the time i had to go to the one in Gallipolis last month. Holy shit, 10$ to do two loads of wash and one full dryer (I hang a lot of my good clothes).

This put me in mind of something [personal profile] evil_little_dog posted the other day about how expensive it is to be poor. Which is 100% accurate. Like now that I'm not sure I can buy a new car (or newer I should say) but mine has 111K on it. If I don't, something is going to blow and it'll be expensive to fix. I CAN afford a laundry suit for home (but the hook up is fucked up) but imagine doing a WHOLE family's laundry at those prices because you can't afford a washer/dryer. Jesus. (it's much cheaper here at the apt)

The coffee shop was packed. I did get a spot, talked to former students, thought about exploding the heads of the adult son/mom combo who was letting their 3 year old daughter/granddaughter run everywhere for the full hour I was there (and they were there before me) She was nearly hit by the door multiple times and nearly took out the waitresses more than that. eye rolls.

Kroger was predictably packed. I have to make cookies for a giveaway but found out my baking powder smelled like ass so I had to go get more. Like the Hunger Games in there. How many people wait to the last second to buy things (asks the idiot who also forget eggs and milk for her baked goods. I had...the lemon. Whee)

They were also beginning to pull down one of the historic buildings today. I got pictures (It was beyond saving which is sad)

I managed to finish a second [community profile] fandomtrees don't get too excited. This was a rec one. Easy peasy.

I'm not looking forward to tomorrow. The temperature fell like a rock today but could be worse. I see what's coming to places I used to live (Lake Erie beach side, Wisconsin). But my issue is a tickle in my chest that says let's get sick. Shut up lungs. Go be weak on your own time, not mine. And my lower left wisdom must be lonely missing its upper wisdom buddy because the entire gum is swollen and painful. Exactly what you want the day before a big meal.

What I Just Finished Reading:

The Tea Dragon Society - very sweet

Revenge Serve Royal - historical mystery, it was pretty good. Found out I read book one and this is book three. Guess who didn't read book 2

What I am Currently Reading:

A Twist of Murder - Charles Dickens is the detective, yes another real person fanfic mystery. So far I am unimpressed.

Death at the Door

Wyches - a graphic novel horror I got from the library today

Normally when I do a cover I sing on it, but it turns out it’s hard for me to sing Adele songs! At least without some considerable reconfiguration. So, I’ll keep working on that, but in the meantime the instrumental track I made for “Someone Like You” is nice and calm and soothing, and I thought y’all might like it. Enjoy.

Turn n Burn, Salt, Fencing

We took the tan truck, a 04 S10, to San Francisco yesterday.  When we got there I dashed off to Rainbow Grocery Coop and got salt.  For decades Portuguese Sea Salt has been my go-to salt.  Not sure why I originally picked it, but it works for me. These days it is distributed by Eden.  What with pickling, smoking and otherwise preparing to store food this year we have gone through a lot of it, so a supply run was needed.  Online the options are a 1# jar, or a 50# sack.  Rainbow has bulk salt and I brought home perhaps 6#.  That should keep us supplied through next canning season!
The truck was hastily packed with two cabinets plus a lot of boxes of stuff, and I didn't get going until almost 3pm so there was a lot of traffic going out of San Francisco and north.  It took just over 2 hours to do what is usually about 55 minutes worth of freeway.  The clock said 4:58 when I pulled into S & C Barns parking (they close at 5 pm).  A cash sale on the new fence panels and mats saved me 3% on the bill.  Hopefully some time soon we  can replace the temporary setup at Winter Quarters.
Another hour plus got me home to Ukiah. Why is driving so tiring?  All you are really doing is just sitting there!
