SOme made, and lessons learned:

1. Remember Covey's step 7? Sharpen the Saw! Holy Jesus, Thor and Vulcan, the sharp saw sinks through the root by itself, almost; the dull one leaves a polished track on the wood. Of course, the second part of this is to keep sharpening the saw, as the soil is very quickly dulling the blade. The front 3 roots are cut through, and the back three roots have been chopped at.

The advice from people that I should just pay a landscaping company $100 to do this is bunk. Having worked landscaping, this is more like a $500 job. I'm down 3 feet, now, and still digging.

Hmm. Do I need to sharpen the shovel?

2. Court is good. The $1092 insurance ticket was $77.50 with proof of insurance and the rest dismissed, and the judge did his best to make it clear (esp. your constitutional rights) and easy. It's always interesting watching the other people; my favorite was the deaf hispanic guy. His sign language was English, he was having trouble getting a license because English is his 3rd language. Then there were all the people so wrapped up in their own drama the didn't listen to the instructions and tried to argue their cases, while this was only an arraignment: you could request school, plead no contest and pay a reduced fine, or request a court date with the officer present. He would also extend fixit tickets and payment terms (pay in 60 days, etc.) But he didn't judge the case...and yet, at least 1/4 of the people were spending a lot of time argueing their case.

3. The home network is completely up. Now more distractions. But there's also all the media--Thud, Serenity, Mirror Mask, Anansi Boys. Distractions are us. But what's the worry of distractions if you don't have a master plan to worry about? Generalized sense of dread needs to be avoided.

4. I love pumpkins. Orange, cheerful, tasty. Now I just need to score some inexpensive eating (as opposed to carving) pumpkins. Need to learn the Afghan sauce that they serve at Kabul (yogurt with dill, and tomato beef.) Time to plan a trip to the Corn Maze at Swank Farms!

5. Wrenching on the bike is good. Tor is very knowledgable. Thank you Tor!

6. This weekend, last war of the season. My plan is to ramrod, loudly, the line. That is, be the guy who's talking and keeping it together. Should be fun. Exhausting, but fun.

7. Off to fighter practice, where I will teach another beginner class. What fun!

I thought the Butt War was the last war of the season?

Depends on your definition of season...

THis is the last out of Kingdom event until Estrella. There's also Mists/Cynagua, so it's not the last event of the season, strictly speaking...
Odds are against me being at the Butt war.
