First of all, Craig's list rocks.
Bought a new (used) bed and a microwave today. Price in store for equivalent (ish) (new): 925. Price used, locally: 390. Wooooooo.
Picked up a small microwave, and a queen sized hypoallergenic bed (barely fits in the van. That'll learn me not to clean my armor out...)
So, onto the title: Guy at the Mancini's store (which sells all the high end models; it seems that all three major stores with "low price guarantees" specialize in different market segments) noted that he expects mattresses to increase in price 30 to 50 percent before the next year. As his cheapest mattress set (Queen sized) is $500, this is going to be pricey.
Why? Katrina knocked a lot of factories offline, including some major producers of foam. Foam is now scarce. It's difficult to make right, and enviromentally very tricky (probably (guess) why it was in Louisiana) and there's much less of it.
True? Sales tactic? I'll check back after the Superbowl.
The other interesting and useful fact that I did not know: Firmness and back support are not directly related. It depends on your posture. If you sleep on your side, you want a less firm mattress. On your back, more firm.
Hmm. There is some studies on this:

Oh, and there was a $10,000 mattress in the store. Hand made, of high quality, and guarranteed for a loooong time...
