Golding ism of the day: Breeding
Cheetahs breed smart fast antelope.
Wolves breed smart fast elk.
People breed slow stupid cows and caesar salad.

When Leigh Ann and Jim and I did our Iron Butt ride to Vancouver, Martin and his lady Carol were kind enough to host us for dinner in Vancouver, WA. The meal is meant to be filling, provide energy, but not weigh you down with indigestibles or make your blood sugar plummet or anything like that.
Normally, the meal is pretty simple: some pasta with a canned sauce, some green salad with dressing, little bread, some coffee, a small dessert. The meal they put together was simple, but one notch up: gnocchi in a wild mushroom sauce, salad with herbs and a balsamic vinagrete, fresh biscuits, coffee brewed from fresh ground beans--they started grinding the beans when we pulled into the driveway. Drop scones for dessert.
It wasn't that much more difficult, or expensive, or complicated than the meal we anticipated, but it was that much better. A treat for all senses. From that meal I learned to put herbs in my salad, to keep the dressing simple, and to spend a little extra effort on things to get a big result.
Martin also heavily influenced my motorcycle choice. He had this bike which was cool wierd techno--a BMW R1100GS tricked out with a purple Corbin seat and some gadgets. I wanted to ride one like that ever since, and figured if this cool dude rides that in Washington conditions, it must be a good bike.
