Bare room

I had not realized how clear a declaration
the walls of a schoolroom are
and when I walk in to sub for the missing teacher
the lack of decoration
is a declaration

in absence

but if I had not given my word to stay
the behaviour of these little children, squalling and challenging and fighting
would have driven me away long ago
and some other decorations would have to be on these walls.
