1. Mundane Name:
John
2. Mundane Job:
In transition again; technology educator is a good title. Yesterday the students managed to make their solar oven catch fire and burn completely! Cool!
3. Persona name:
John Theophilous
4. How did you come up with your name?
Starting decision was to keep "John", it wasn't used much when I joined. Found boffer fighting, and was very enthusiastic about it, and a friend said that I was John The Bofftist. Was that for a while, then when the time came to register, went with John Theophilous--good religious name, and a word play on John the Awfulest Bofftist. Really like the name still, works on many levels.
5. Where and when did your personal live?
Floated around, but now I find myself in this Western land. Spain, for quite a while, though.
6. What is your Known World Location?
Shire of Crosston, Principality of the Mists, Kingdom of the West.
7. What kingdom do you consider to be your home?
West. Never been anywhere else to live.
8. How long have you played?
30 years since my first event.
9. How did you get started?
Linda of the Lakelands, who knew of the SCA through relatives, got a bunch of us to go to a St. David's day. MAN, it was fun.
10. Why did you join?
Wine, women, and song. Or, Beer, babes and bashing. Or the fact that you could have real fun, camp, learn interesting things, and be with people who strove for honor and chivalry.
11. Have you registered a name?
Yes.
12. Have you registered a device?
Yes, third choice, but Flieg got it through. Still owe him mushrooms in beer for that.
13. What awards have you been granted? In what kingdom did you receive these awards?
Bunch. 30 years, right? But the ones that mean the most are the Sergeant to Baroness Amanda of Lionsgate, the Pied D'Argent from dancing with Grun (now Duquessa Juana), and Order of the Swan from Eric and Aricia from the M/C Andrew and I autocratted. Oh, and the Knight Bannerette, that meant a lot to me and still is the one I strive to embody most.
14. How many events do you attend each year?
20-40.
15. What is the best event you have ever been to?
Wow. Hard to pick. Westermark/Lionsgate war? The Pennsic where the choir sang in the replica of Chartes? The Crosston Dance Ball where Cynthia du Pre Argent became Baroness, after we trapped her on a ladder and read poetry to her, Rusty and I and Francois (John)? The Egil's where they had the forge, and the "Red Dawn" battles, and sumo wrestling with Grendel? Watching Matt get knighted? That Midrealm event in the Brewery in Jaravetler (sp!) (Belly Up to the Bar) where Branwen kicked butt and I got to understand some of the Midream ways?
16. What is the worst event you have ever been to?
12th Night in An Tir as a courtier to Amanda, where the court was literally 12 hours long. How she survived it with such grace. My arms hurt for days afterwards. Estrella 8 years ago at Shemp farms where the event had deaths, and I worked 20 of the most disagreeable constable hours I have ever worked, from shadowing someone accused of beating a child (false accusation) to having that ...yeah...that event.
17. What event do you make it to every year?
The one that was highest on the list was the Geoffry's War, but we retired that event. 12th Night, historically speaking.
18. What event do you refuse to go to?
....don't refuse, but don't care for Ducal; too hot, too many flies. Against other events.
19. Who is your favorite person to hang at an event with?
Changes. More than one. Depends on the event.
20. What activities do you participate in?
Not doing too much now. Singing, fighting, serving, heralding, dancing...whatever comes along.
21. What activity would you like to learn?
Rapier Combat.
22. Are you a marshal?
Yes. All kinds of Marshal, except for Rapier.
23. How many tents have you had destroyed at events?
They get destroyed in the garage. Lots of broken poles/blown zippers over the years, but no serious tent destruction at an SCA event. Lost a sunshade at Burning man last year, ripped in half.
24. Has your garb ever caught on fire?
Not that I remember. There was one time where I was juggling coals, though; burnt my thumb and took a vow of non-drinking after that one. Same event Siobhan was laureled at, and Uther was knighted.
25. Have you ever woke up in a strange person’s tent?
Nope. Slow that way. Used to wake up in strange places outside, though, long long ago.
26. Do you have a pavilion?
Not currently. Have had a yurt and a marquee and given them away. Time for another one.
27. Are you a peer?
Yes.
28. Do you ever want to be a peer?
Want isn't the right term anymore. But I think it will occur one more time...
29. Is a coincidence that peer rhymes with beer?
Is it a coinkidink that peer rhymes with sneer? Smear? Queer? Deer? Lotsa words rhyme.
30. Are you a squire, apprentice or protegee?
Was Squired as a friendship thing to Sir Eric Foxworthy, currently apprenticed in a way that started as a humorous thing and has grown meaning ever since to Maestra Juana.
31. Who would you like to be squired, apprenticed or protegee'd to?
...Master Moshe, so I could learn his performance skills. Oy! What an AMAZING performer! But we'd have to be in the same place, and that's not the case.
32. What is your war cry?
Recently? "Follow Me!" and my personal favorite, "Get over there and leg that chiv!"
33. Have you ever been pulled off of the field for your safety?
No. Taken myself off for temper, rarely. Laughed at by a chiurgeon once for a cut in my eyebrow: "John, you have the best bleeders!"
34. What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you in armor?
Funny? I don't know. Coolest? Bunch of those.
35. Have you read copora?
No. Have read most of corpora, though.
36. Circlets, how do you feel?
Who cares? But this is the West, our sumptuary laws are simple.
37. What household(s) do you belong to?
None, currently. Don't consider war units households.
38. If you could change one thing about the SCA what would it be?
Make it easier to get into, and reduce the length of courts. Too long!
39. What is your favorite part of the SCA?
It's a great place to work on many things, full of great people.
40. What is your SCA Goal for the next 7 years?
7 years? Write and have sung (or just have sung the ones written) my madrigals. Have one perfect war day, where the commands work. Get good enough so my fencing isn't flailing. Reconnect with some of the greats...I dunno. Exist and fight until it's time to lay down my weapons. Get more good people involved. But really? SCA goals are a very small subset of overall goals...
John
