Got a NOTICE OF STORED VEHICLE (22852 VC) today.    Means that the CHP found the van I donated and towed it into a storage yard.   And since the title has not yet transferred from me, that I'm responsible for it.   Meaning storage fees, determined daily.

This is going to be interesting.    The only documentation I have is a piece of paper that says "you gave your van to plannned Parenthood".  No keys, no title...it's not really mine.

Frak.

I got a call a while back from Mountain View's finest. Apparently, someone had been involved in a minor stop in the car that I donated a few years back. There was some concern if possibly the car had been stolen. I told them that I'd donated it some time prior, and they went away happy.

Although I was annoyed at the the fact that it sounded like my intended recipients of the gift had never actually gotten any benefit out of it, there weren't any civil repercussions.

Just let them know you donated it.
My folks had something similar happen when I was a kid.
They'd donated a car, and then a couple weeks later the cops showed up at our door! It had apparently been used in a robbery... and the title had never been changed.
Like xthread's situation, my folks just showed the donation receipt and the lovely policemen went away. :-)

Good luck!

That Donation letter is sufficient. You can get out of being responsible for the van.

Call PP first, and ask them what happened. Then call CHP and tell them you donated the car.

For future reference, you should file a release of liability with the DMV the same day you hand over the keys: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg138.pdf

You get notification for the opportunity to buy your car out of hock. If you don't do anything with it, I think they put it up at auction. Contact the PD to be sure, but I don't think you're on the hook for anything.
