What do I actually do? I excite and inspire. Most recently, as a teacher, I have had good luck exciting students about science and engineering, especially at the Summer Technology Academy http://www.techacademysv.com/students.html founded by Dr. Jay Pinson but also in high schools in the Bay Area (LPS SJ, HTH Burlingame, etc.) I have also excited and inspired as a Sales Engineer, for companies ranging from Digital Link to NetScout.

Teach and Learn?

Three:
From "The Essence of Zen" by The Five Mile Press:

"It is as if a raindrop fell from heaven into a stream or fountain and became one with the water in it so that never again can the raindrop be separated from the water of the stream; or as if a little brook ran into the sea and there was thenceforward no means of distinguishing its water from the ocean; or as if a brilliant light came into a room through two windows and though it comes in divided between them, it forms a single light inside." --St. Teresa   (Hmm.  Not found.  False attribution?)

“Pain is never permanent” --St. Teresa of Avila

I don't expect this to be a suggestion, but maybe something to base thinking off of. Different ways to teach.

At the twins' preschool, a man came in with way cool science experiments to show to the kids. Fun noises, things with resonance, sticky science things, strange sensations. The kids loved it, and were very excited. He had some handouts to go back to the kids' households about the teaching points in the gee-whiz demos he did. I have the impression he makes a living doing these shows/classes.

The more I talk with people who are in science, and wish more people were in science and math (both sexes) and the more I watch my kids grow, the more I am convinced that the time to make sure that more young people go into science and math careers (and the related fields like programming, or at least be pro-science if their love is not science) is in the single-digit years.

Interestingly, this is also before kids acquire poisonous Attitudes toward others (whatever their Others are, be it age, ethnicity, language, body type, etc.)

I find three places where the quote is said to be from St. Teresa, but none of them give any more info. Frustrating.

I'm glad to hear what Stewart Brand is up to these days. CQ/WER was a formative publication for us. Too bad it's no longer being published.

Hi, JT!

This is Morgan. Just dropping a note to say Hi! Hope to see you at Crown and get back in touch and stuff. Cool to run into you at Maker Fair. There is a steampunk convention on Halloween weekend, and Abney Park is playing!

I'll be in the Dealer's Den with clever contraptions.

Meantime, be well. I wish you all the best.
