5 Science Experiments

Dave H, is amazing!

1. Magnetite. If you run a strong magnet over the black bands on the beaches, you'll pull out the magnetite (magnetic iron). Because it has been beach weathered, it's less sharp than iron filings. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetite) If you keep the magnet in a plastic bag, you can then invert the plastic bag trap them.

2. Soba bottle ? Using a glass bottle that is cylindrical, hit it with a rubber mallet, the bottom will pop out due to cavitation. http://www.metacafe.com/watch/780996/bare_handed_bottle_smash/ ?

Wow. Leads to http://www.amasci.com/

Need to practice!

3. Electronics with fuse in circuit. Electronics with 2 bulbs, break open second bulb, let tungsten burn out--about 2 sec. Cut tungsten clear, heat glass with torch under power, when glass is red hot (orange?) will conduct. Will maintain heat.

4. (3b) Beer bottle heated to warm on a spot will absorb microwaves and heat up. You can melt the bottle.

5. Copper tube with a magnet in it; 3' of tube with neodymium magnets is about 12 sec. of drop.

5b. Shake an aluminum pan with a magnet, it will move and stick.

#2 can also be used to open a wine bottle with no cork screw. Place your shoe on the bottom to cushion, and tap gently but forcefully, to slowly move the cork out of the bottle till you can grasp it.
