Kayaking
Went Kayaking in Monterey Bay yesterday with Selkiediver (who hunts fish from her kayak.) WOnderful! Perfect weather, a view of Monterey that is Steinbeckian (the rotting wood and old discarded boilers of the old fish factories, the sound of the Harleys, the view of the undersides of things and the weeds poking out. There's a hidden beach (called Hidden Beach) and it's easier to kayak that I thought it would be.
Until the kayak fills up (the flotation tanks) with water. Then the swell rolls it over and it's a bitch to manuever. This was only the last 400 yard (well, probably more than that earlier) but I went and complained about it (the kayak had probably 200 pounds of water in it...I couldn't drag it out of the surf. Lots of water!) so they gave me a certificate for an extra day.
$30 gets a wetsuit and a kayak, and there's a two for one coupon in Bay Nature.
selkiediver has a kayak and is a great person to go with (you can rest while she goes zooming around) and I'm going to go kayak Elkhorn Slough when I get back (some sunny November day). Monterey Bay Kayak was a good company and a pleasant experience, even if the boat did fill up.
That which does not kill us makes us bitch.

The swell rolls it over and then it's upside down. You did a great job flipping it back over and hopping back in. It is worth mentioning that the 'yaks they rent, especially to beginners, are very stable sit-on-tops and do not leak the vast majority of the time.
I love 'yaking! I hope next time the water visibility is a bit clearer and then I can actually take some time and jump in to see what's under the kelp. Of course, that won't happen at the slough. But let me know when you're going. I like 'yaking there, too!
Yakity yak!
I love kayaks!
