Stalled.

Third week of January. Fourth? Third. Whatever. Not getting out of house much. After a fabulous lunch/coffee up near the airport, I came back on 280, and poked down the side streets by Crystal Springs Res. and tried to hit some stores in Pala Olto (closed on Mondays.)

Went and talked with my Mom, who floored me. After asking about progress, and listening carefully to my detailed listing of what's up, she told me she'd fund the teacher's certificate if I wanted that.

Wow. Just...wow. That's like $20K, minimum...at Santa Clara. Wow.

I don't need her to fund it, I just need to either go for it, or go back into the sales game with the intent to win. And I can't decide which.

I dunno--someone who uses learnteach for their LJ id--I think you really love teaching most of all--so go for it.

This is from someone who wishes I did that credential thing years ago, but was always distracted by things in the present. I'm not willing to work days, and do school at night for a few years to make it happen (for a job that pays less than what I make now).

Go get the credential! When you are searching for direction, the best place to be is in school, then you can make choices afterwards year by year to satisfy your mood.

My father's biggest disappointment in me was that I didn't take up the family business. He said it keeps you young. Many teachers in my family for several generations.

What else you gonna do for the next year?
This next year is going to pass whether you're taking the program or not. So, in a year, where would you rather be - where you are now, still dithering, or be almost done with this program and with a much firmer grasp on whether you want to teach for a living or not (and the credentials to do it if you decide want to)?

A man took a walk on a path through the woods, and lo, he came to a fork in the road. The left path was clear and in sunshine, but the road itself was rocky and rutted. The right path was enshrouded with overhanging trees, and seemed gloomy, but the road itself was smooth and easy to walk upon.

And looking at the fork in the road, the man said
"Why can't I have a knife instead to cut through all this decision making shit?"

But in a slightly more useful vein - which decision is the one you are most likely to look back on in 20 years time and say "man, I wish I'd done that" if you don't take it?

I've been reading your posts the last while. Go for teaching. You always sound so happy when you talk about it. The engineering sales job, meh, pays well but it's just a job. I don't get any sense that you get "juiced" from it. What good is money if you spend your day draining yourself out? One of the plus things about being single w/ no offspring (I can testify) is that you don't have to make a lot of money to get by.

IMNSHO, but based on knowing you reasonably well for sixteen and a half years, BACK AWAY FROM THE SALES GAME. Slowly, slowly, I think it's just sunning itself, but you just can't risk a major bite. Good, far enough away, now -- quick like a bunny -- run as far and as fast as you can.
