12th Night

The last day of Christmas, now we return to the year of work. Tomorrow I diet, but today I ruminate--so many images, people, things going on at 12th Night.

My Twelfth Night was to a different rhythm. I had few committed duties (MC one dance thing, help at the other, dinner at some point) but wanted to make sure Rebbecca had a good time (or, at least, that I didn't run her into the ground.) It's different for me, not being in the runway landing pattern of court. And I didn't mind missing all the court, frankly; I think that court as a ceremony that binds together the SCA as a Kingdom has lost out to court of personality where the Royals try for adoration.

Flashes of memory:

The winning hat for me was not Ascelin's popcorn top but Gillian's HiveHairscraper Hennin. In men, didn't see anything truely winning in hats. Actually, the hats on Aurelia's table were wonderful, but they were all girl hats...I know Bennet gets some of them, but none were displayed. Best garb overall? I don't know; there was a lot of very fabulous stuff. The spring green linen that both Heath's girlfriend and Rebecca were wearing was quite cute, of course.

Best Art? For me, Siobhan's Belly Dance demonstration was wonderful--the dancers came from completely different traditions, but all were very skilled, and performed very well, and the dances were all very different, which was nice to see, especially as the explanations mentioned sources and evoked places. The Duchess' ball combined showy good food (after dinner!) with good music and dancing, so that was a wonderful time, especially since I got to drum, which is fun.

So many people to see! I need to go have longer conversations with so many of them.

Things are starting to move. I will fight this year, and enter arts competitions, and have more fun.

Best stuff: The little clay dice.

12th Night was fabulous. Like you, we saw quite a few people but didn't have enough time for extended conversation. *sigh*

I didn't expect to have time for extended conversations with anyone, but, much to my surprise I wound up doing exactly that with a few people. No doubt I missed out on seeing (getting hugs from) other friends thereby, but I rather enjoyed it.

I need to think more on this, but I think that you are on to something here.

Is it broken? Or simply different? If broken, how would you fix it, were you granted the power to do so?

I was in there at the beginning of Coronation Court, and that's ~exactly~ what it felt like. So I left, and enjoyed the rest of my day hanging out with friends.

Yup, what he had there is a very good point. Question is, how do we fix it?

Rose (wtr) said it best:

She isn't liking SCA events as much because they are feeling like spectator events, rather than participatory. That, I think, is the core of the problem: When the system was put together, everyone went to court because that's where everything happened, ceremonially and organizationally. At that time, a large event was 200 people. Now a small event is 200 people, we're several (I figure 4) generations of longtimers from the beginning (if you've been in 10 years, you're a true long timer, and we're in AS 40) and we've forgotten how to make court participatory.

Still thinking about this.

So nice finally meeting your lady! She's lovely! Wish I would have had time to chat with her a bit.

I always love to hear about good hats.

Could you describe the HiveScraper Hennin?

[identity profile] ppfuf.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a white hennin, about 18 inches tall and came to a point. Lightweight floaty veil. The Mists crown fit perfectly at the base. I can't find a picture, but hopefully they will show up soon.
LifeOfGlamour made it, and talked a little about it here: http://lifeofglamour.livejournal.com/466060.html

I'm going to do a post about it soon - I'm collecting pics of it right now from various social networking sites because my camera broke and I didn't get any pics of my own! I'll post the pics and the images I used for inspiration. I'll let you know when it goes up, come on by - your work was very inspiring to me many years ago when I was just starting out in the West. :-)

OOh, goody! I look forward to it!

I posted some pics of the hennin in my journal just now (along with some other stuff):

I'd love to hear what you think.

Could you friend me so that I can see them? It's fine if you unfriend me later, I don't do drama. ;)

Goodness, I'm sorry, I recently had to go to friends-only with my journal and it slipped my mind. Of course I'll friend you!

Here's a nice picture, if you can see it, from a relative distance

::nods:: I see what you mean....

[identity profile] katerit.livejournal.com 2010-01-11 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw, in court, someone trying very hard to bring people together and have us start a new page. Any system of royalty will become, to some extent, shaped by personality, and I dislike reigns where the royalty have absolutely no showmanship. Besides, you would, if you were reigning, infuse that reality with your personality, and that would not necessarily be a bad thing.

Not a comment on the Royals, per se,

[identity profile] learnteach.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
but on the institution of "SCA Royal Court". Of course the personalities of our actors inform the roles; how can the rest of us get back on the stage?

thanks for the kind words about the food at the ball. The leftovers will went there way to the Crosston Ball.
