I love your indomitable will. I love your serenity in the face of unstoppable boys--not a constant serenity, but a regained one. I love your smile--it's wicked, and knowing, and joyful. I love seeing you at bootcamp, your presence mocking all my excuses.
I love your ability to survive as a tough fem in a house of BOIs. I love your ability to express yourself, whether in the town council discussions, or your grief, or your joy. I love your intense intellectuallity--writing! And you are my Platonic Ideal of a Boston Intellectual Babe.
The only moniker I can remember ever being attached to me is "Peer of the Frickin Realm" because I used it to make a point and it stuck. Boston Intellectual Babe. You have completely made my week if not month. You delight me. Thank you so much.
But I am inspired-- You are a font of fun in the book department, one of three people in my life I look forward to hearing library news from... You are unexpected! To me. Perhaps your life feels routine, but it seems very exotic. And you are beautiful, musically.
But to start with, here are three things I love about you...
* Your endless devotion to Art and Craft * Your willingness to try new things, no matter how crazy or wondrous * Your voice. I've loved listening to you sing, tell stories, and speak since my very first SCA event. In my head and heart, your booming baritone will always be linked to the joy of discovering my tribe.
You have always always done the right thing, even if painful. I am in awe of how you took a blow that keeps striking you, and turning it into a positive to pursue your dreams; Your changing yet constant muse in an area I have no talent bemuses me. I have seen the beauty and gift of your gardening. Plus, you throw a great party!
You! You are driving through adversity to goals! You! You are ska-ndelous and Sca-delish! You! The devil steals your smile sometime, when he wants to seduce dirty angels.
Oh, I guess I"ll just put what I love about you, John!
I love how quickly and completely you can turn into someone's dear friend I love that you have so many completely unrelated interests in the world, and will teach your skills, but can also learn so rapidly on something that interests you. I love that your old-fashioned, gentelmanly and genteel manners -- they are so endearing.
You are the person I point to when I want to illustrate the difference between The Order of Chivalry and The Romance of Chivalry. the Order sees Chivalry as something that should be a part of one's actions, to a lesser or greater degree. But the seekers of the Romance of Chivalry (romance in both the modern and the medieval meaning), which to me you exemplify, sees Chivalry as an ideal to immerse onself in, to constantly seek, to idealise and desire, and to treasure each facet of it that you are able to learn. Chivalry is the Grail quest - the seeking is the test of your soul, and the end may never be reached, but is worth seeking all the same.
I love your voice. One day you and I and a lute and a guitar and a harp and a few dozen books of songs are going to spend a long evening that may take all weekend, possibly with a few carefully chosen companions, and we are going to sing everything: period, pop, rock, folk, classic, bubblegum and filk. In fact, I think we should book a date and a place and make it happen. For some weird reason, I've always wanted to visit the Catskills...
I love your passion for food. 'Nuff said - we're on the same wavelength and anything more needs to be said at great length with a full mouth.
shared an ability to be "Mom" without being a pain; creating host spaces (your ability to herd burnt cats is quite lovely, you know.) you both had witty, fun laughs... You both make the world nicer for being there.
I must agree with the "I love your voice" comment; some of my best memories of you involve you in song. Not just the richness and beauty of your voice itself, but also the way you can take any tune and compose new words in real time, seamlessly. Add to this list your laugh and your smile and it is easy to understand why you count among my favorite people in the West; I miss you!
Cheating :-) 1. Your voice... 2. Your desire to make the world a better place, one scheme at a time. 3. You open your heart again and again despite all of life's disappointments.
I love you for your green and black thumbs, which both inspire me and give me something to help with, too. I love you for your sense of whimsy - for the toys and the robots and the L.E.D.'s. I love you in the Farmer's Market on a gloomy day, in your funny big SCA coat, smiling and laughing and making other people's days brighter as only a big mischievous stranger with a beautiful voice can.
