1. To have a dinner group to discuss technology and eat good food and drink good wine, like Darwin's uncle had: The Lunaticks. http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/292/5514/55
(Hey, Cathyn, send me a picture of Iron-mad's obelisk if you see it.)

2. To sing some of PDQ Bach. And some Tom Lehrer. Silly Song time!

3. A new car, with gas milage greater than 30 mpg, a radio that has a microphone and bluetooth, and decent sound systems, and some gimcrackery too!

4. A postcard from a beautiful woman from burning man. Next week I shall have Burner Week South; where I shall mimic the rhythms of burning man, but only at home. Beach Burn at some point!

5. Sleep. Hey, I can go do that now...

1. Obama isn't. B L A C K to me, and I am not judging him as part of "black culture.". Southern influence here makes this whole situation fraught.

2. The WashPot is not "a notoriously liberal rag.". OMFG!

3. Scientists, engineers and experienced military people are not "just another constituency" in their areas of expertise.

4. I do not live where national politics are my livelyhood.

...

The game they play here is not for me. This is not home. Australia has more of the same trees than Virginia.

...it's different enough here that some consider me gay, because I'm not local boy. And I don't squick the correct way.

Plans change. I'm at a cousin's near the airport now, rather than down by Lake Anna (it's not 6 hours away, unless there's a concert clogging the freeway.)

I thought I'd go visit a friend, and was able to look up his address, and discovered that his birthday is today. He won't be celebrating it here, but I'm raising a glass to him right now. Give the transit situation and me not having a car, I won't be able to make it down, but he was born 7^2 years ago today.

Happy Birthday, Michael-San.

Off to DC

Where it will be much worse than it was in Vegas. Taking my brother Rex with my mother to see relatives, the Smithsonian and as much other culture as my leg can stand--but not taking the laptop so I won't be online much. No worries.

Vegas Strip is a good place to get a hotel room, lounge by the pool, catch some major shows, eat a nice meal with friends, stroll the architecture, and leave. If you go with that flow it's perfectly nice. But blending with drunk crowds, in noisy places, trying to impress fools, seeing dead lumps sitting in front of life sucking machines? Reminds me that not taking my laptop is not such a bad idea. But seeing old friends, dressed up, meeting new people, and witnessing Laina and Cathyn proving they can Mac, Kenna I think of a better time?

I want to dress up, see a show, hit dinner, perhaps drink a pimm's cup and sing with Andrew. Either one. And have other friends along too...

The best thing is to not take too much responsibility for others, and focus on the mantra: "Icecoldwateronedollar". I'm sure it will be a great mantra for DC as well.

They came lurching out of the duststorm, shaking spazmodically. The wind moaned in the cables that held the place together, the flags slapped and chattered, and through scarfs and rags and breathing masks--much like refugees from some evil plague--they muttered, grumbled, coughed.

1. Doctor visit good/bad. Healing good, keep it up. Yay. How long? Until done. Um...no, really. Wound closure in 6-8 weeks, estimated, perhaps, don't stress yourself. Emotions yo-yo...

2. If pain, take pain drugs, elevate leg, don't worry too much if it's less than 3 on the 10 scale. OK.

3. Must go eat in San Carlos. The Refuge, a Belgian Beer (with correct glasses) and pastrami and charcuterie place (http://refugesc.com/home.html) and the English Rose. Both on Laurel. What else does Laurel St. have?

4. Room fail for IWOM; when I said throw stuff in backyard, she was too polite. I meant everything; appliances too! My fault, she fixed it. Ah well, better to be closer to Cody, and we'll work it all out. Yay for IWOM and LCB (Laina's Cute Boy, or eLena's Count Boyish).

5. SCA-Foo: ??? Well, if I was going to Crown (going to wedding instead) I'd serve meatloaf on toothpicks, probably flambe', for the flames spinning about a request. While I recognize the underlying principle issue, I remember who is issuing the request/statement/whatever, who are bad, historically, at communicating intentions unless you talk directly to them. While I recognize an issue, and a metaissue that we're continually making it harder to play our game through overfamiliarity (directions that assume you've been there, systems that assume you know how they work), raising the bar (Period pavilion and Food for 40) and dealing with "Eric" mores and culture without instruction, and lack of entry ways into our game unless you hook up with a gregarious peer and/or spend years figuring it out, well, it's a big issue. But I'm more excited by my own joys and rebirths in the SCA as much as getting to COOK WITH CRYSTAL and to DO PAS WITH JANOS AND ETAINE the next weekend at Coronet.

Still, some meatloaf, some bamboo skewers soaked in spiced vinegar (or rosemary twigs), a lazy susan made of metal, bacon vodka with some Everclear spiked in (or just baconed/barbeque everclear.) W00T! Flaming meatloaf spinning! Political statement AND tasty snack food!

6. Teaching or Tech. Tech Teaching? Teen Tech Teaching? Tutoring, teaching, teens engineering and Technology? Or just playing with words, words, words.

7. Mmmm. Bacon. Explosion! Ate at "The Kitchen Table" in Mt. View on Monday, they have Lamb Bacon, so you can have a kosher BLT. (Shades of "Princess Bride"). Totally worth it.

8. While I'm at it...Tomatoes. Strawberries. Summer fruity goodness.

Injury healing apace, no exact prognosis of "done". To clarify, I'm actually fully functional--I can walk, run, dance, no pain, no worries, but that's not the Doctor's orders. I can drive my car and climb into the way high up van. I can be in polite company.

The required wound care regimen is easy, and mainly consists of getting the leg up. If I don't do it, after about 8 hours the wound will hurt a little bit, and I'll be cranky, especially because I know I'm not healing.

The really cranky thing is dealing with filing the paperwork; I'm getting conflicting answers, people who won't accept or return calls, and while the same department is responsible for patient billing and charity applications, the energy is devoted one way.

There's a TMI post about wetpacking, but you can figure that out yourself. Also, I need to avoid tempting activities in the heat, because that will promote leaking. Eww.

So, plan for now: FOLLOW Doctor's Orders. Leg up, hot pack, wound care.

Talking with Xtal of the Westermark, my desire to burn meat over fire is up again. And to spit roast eggs, which I got to do at Rowany thanks to Tanw the Confused's cooking frame. So at Mist's Coronet, we're going to do these things! Xtal has posted a list of cookbooks, which I will peruse, but I'm thinking of spit roasted meat, eggs, and some sauces--nothing too complicated for my first cooking playdate. Come join the fun!
