Lack of leads?

No more sympathy. 3 extra leads first class, eight in the second. It bring a beginner's class, I've been hit 3 times and spiked twice.

Radio Silence? Nope, just Lent. And a new roommate.

So not much posting here and I've been asked: Am I deeply depressed? Has my man-pout taken over my world completely? What is up?

Human contact. For Lent, I gave up computer time--any time I spend on the computer in a day, I also have to spend sweating. This has cut waaaaay down on the time online possible, and much of it is spent getting things done. As well, Jeannie has moved in, and her brilliance and decorating coolness has illuminated how much of a pit the rest of the house has gotten. She painted the room walls a warm yet neutral butternut color, we put in a new lamp and some found art, and decorated the space.

All the on-hold cleaning and remaking projects are now Rocket Go, Go GO!. So anyway. Lots of cleaning and fixing and sorting.

Also got to see Steve Wozniak on "Dancing with the Stars". Wow, he's playing the nerd. I've been really enjoying Friday Night Waltz, even got to teach last week. Big Fun! I need to learn more, luckily Richard Powers is teaching starting next Tuesday for two months, at socialdance.stanford.edu, so off I go. As well, I've been enjoying the 5 Rhythms (or at Kairyth sez, "Dance Church") on Mondays in Mountain View.

Two more weeks of Lent, then Easter, then...well, I'll probably not be on here completely. But that's OK, things to do.

Oh, and in the "The Universe Laughs At You, and your little plans in toto too!" I have a chance at a science/technology teaching job uniquely suited to my skills and experience. The kicker? School is in Oakland. But...I could teach and work on getting my cert at the same time, working with my favorite teacher ever.

Oakdale Cheese is good!

If you pass through Oakdale (up towards the Sierra) for any reason, you pass the Oakdale Cheese Company. They have a storefront there with animals in the back and a picnic area, and a fruit stand (which isn't that good). But the CHEESE, Grommit, the CHEESE is excellent!

Was just having a nosh of garlic gouda (gouda is the only cheese they make there, and they do it very well) and I discovered that their cheese is sticky. It pulled the temporary crown on my tooth right off! Since cheese is not supposed to be hard, I was able to figure that out quickly.

But really, best gouda ever.

No more school...wrong.

Decided a couple months ago--after some cogitation--that education, as a field, wasn't working. But to close the lose ends, I called the school I spent blood, sweat and tears at (literally) and asked why I had been dropped from the sub list; what had I done wrong? Nothing. Please come in, good to see you, check it out. (The office manager had changed jobs, and I was a "special" sub, and she misplaced my number, and and...) so anyway, worked their yesterday and today.

Night and day.

The bangers are gone. The wild kids...are normal HS problems, not carrying knives. Everyone is so much more relaxed. You can't see swarms of Nortenos forming up against the Sureno's invasion. The rest of the students aren't turtling around, ready to duck to someplace save.

The chem teacher has a lab, and performs them. The English(honors) sophomore class submits their assignments via wiki. A shade structure is going up in the central quad. There is a greater mix of ethnicities. The student body sponsored a musical chairs competition today, for free dress passes.

All the things I forsaw and fought for are happening, along with some other dreams. It's like heaven.

I get to go back on Tuesday.

I'm rethinking the "working in education" thing.

Getting it right.

Nailing a patterned dance is nice. Getting a waltz to the point where you can dance and drift away, the room spinning, is absolutely lovely.

I need to get there more often. For those interested, Richard Power's next set of dance classes will be announced this weekend on socialdance.stanford.edu and are well worth attending.

I need a photo of me waltzing.

Epitaph

For Michael Plotts, Sir Michael San Sever:

"Pen or Sword? Mighty with both."

I'm going to go down to the meadery tomorrow afternoon, and raise a glass or two to him; if you want to come share stories with me, do. If not here, we'll have another time, perhaps Crown, but probably sooner, closer.

I think we should look at setting up a memorial college fund for his daughters. We can talk about that, too.

For those who haven't heard, he died earlier today. Reqiescat in Pace.

For the rest, here's some memories, scattered and random:

A Song-- http://history.westkingdom.org/Bardic/MargretheAstridRavn/ThreeHearts.htm

A Picture: some good ones on the site.

stories, later.

EDIT: For those who didn't know, Michael has been working as a Federal Marshal. On a training course last year, his aorta dissected. That is, it split open. He was rushed to the hospital where two open heart surgeries were performed. When they checked him in January, they found a 6 cm (2 inch) ...you know, he tells this all so much better than me, and the livejournal handle is [livejournal.com profile] likesargent

End story, he didn't make it. His family is supported by well, family and close friends, and his friends from the Marshals, who have asked that we not disturb them. When Karen passes an address on to me for cards, I will pass it on.

Prayer for Endarkenment 1.0

Oh Lord of Light, I pray for darkness.
Not of the spirit, for it is despair that I seek to avoid.
Not of the night, for that is given every day.
Not in the day, although bless the rain and weather that we receive.

Oh Lord, let not my eyes be dazzled with the brightness of either the Sun or the lights man has made.
Let me stand in the dark, so that my pupils open, and I can see the fainter lights all around me.
Let me close my eyes and see with my skin, remembering that I have my own darkness.
Give me strength to break habits that call for light, for sight, and remember that sound, and touch, and smell, and taste are all your senses as well.

Let the saints I know intercede for me, St. Teresa, who cried out but continued down the road, walking in darkness and enjoying the humor of it;
St. Siobhan, who brought the darkness into her music,
Senkyu-sama, who pointed out the dark.

Give me the understanding to accept the darkness within me.

Let me open to the miracles of every day, and the rising of the sun, and the colors of sunset, the coming of the dark.

Amen.

Prayer for Enlightenment
O Holy Ghost, divine Spirit of light and love, I consecrate to Thee my understanding, my heart and my will, my whole being for time and for eternity. May my understanding be always obedient to Thy heavenly inspirations and the teachings of the holy Catholic Church, of which Thou art the infallible Guide; may my heart be ever inflamed with love of God and of my neighbor; may my will be ever conformed to the divine will, and may my whole life be a faithful following of the life and virtues of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to whom with the Father and Thee be honor and glory for ever. Amen.

Totally cool book.

SCIENCE!

Darwin Day at Stanford: http://www.darwinday.org/events/listing.php?id=12830

For myself, I plan to read several chapters of the "Voyage of the Beagle" (available on Gutenberg Project) and plagarize them for my bad Steampunk story, which is muta////
evolving in my brain. I think the Winchester Mystery house is involved.

Then I'll go and find some earthworms in the yard, identify them, and study them quietly for a bit. Perhaps practice my sketching. Contemplate knowledge.

http://books.google.com/books?id=-ccRAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=action+of+worms#PPP9,M1

"Worms have played a more important part in the history of the world than most persons would at first suppose. In almost all humid countries they are extraordinarily numerous, and for their size possess great muscular power." (Conclusions)

Ah, science. Newton was revolutionary, but Darwin, by luck, perseverance and a passion for observation, gave us evolutionary.

Here's my toast for the 12th! "Raise a glass, and drink with me,
To the man who proved us perhaps monkey!
Charles Darwin who looked and saw
Natural Selection as God's Law
Raise a glass, or tail, or fin,
Drink with me to Dr. Darwin!"

And if you come by the meadery at about 5, you can do the toast with me. I'll even buy you a pint if you like. Sarah, you can have as many as you want on the 12th (as long as someone else drives!)

I love long walks in the rain.

At lunch, had a lovely wide ranging conversation with Vytas, which makes me want to go have fun in tech. And also makes me want to walk more. After some cooking, tried to head out to see "The Bear" at the Dragon Theater in Palo Alto, http://www.dragonproductions.net/ but the van ran out of gas. Walked back to the gas station and bought a disposable gas can (box with a bladder) and went and put gas in the van. Would turn over, but not start. Called various people (in all of this) and then AAA, which sent out a second gallon. All good, except the filler hose on the box fell into the tank...problems down the road.

Still about an hour and a half of walking in Palo Alto, nice exercise.

Many thoughts, not really worth putting in here...
